Bring you by: Today's chemical: Sodium BenzoateEWG Risk Outcome: What is it:Sodium benzoate is a preservative. Safety information:Type of products that are in:Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, facial and body lotions, mouthwashing Some brands that use this ingredient: MyChelleOblige by NatureKiss my FaceJasonAveeno Opinon de AlbaSteph: However, I am a bit careful with this ingredient, after having done hundreds of studies, I have not found much evidence that it acts so. It seems that the body is able to decompose it easily and boot the system. Studies have considered it safe as used in cosmetic applications because it is used in small quantities. However, some people may be sensitive to it, and if you are hormonally sensitive or unbalanced, you would limit your exposure as much as you can. Also, make sure there is no vitamin C present with it, as it can form the carcinogen benzene in your presence. The bottom line is, avoid it if you can, but if you can't find a safer alternative, it's safe in limited quantities. In food, no doubt avoid it. If you've eaten something with vitamin C, and then eat something with sodium benzoate, you can create benzene in your body. Comments (20) Is it just sodium benzoate and vitamin C that are a concern? What about Sodium Benzoate used in a formula with several essential citrus oils? Citrus essential oils actually do not contain vitamin C, only juice. So they wouldn't have the same reaction. This is in Hilands cough and cold. Isn't that safe? So what is the best of two ills related to polysorbate 20 " sodium benzoate in baby wipes? What about the use of sodium benzoate in nkh children? Do you know if there's enough evidence to show that it decreases the levels of blood cells in csf or plasma? Some Ava Anderson products contain Geogard Ultra, which (in my limited understanding) is or is very closely linked to sodium benzoate... how shameful! Should we be looking for this harmless "Geogard Ulta" too? Geogard Ultra should not be listed on any product label, as it is the brand name of the condom, and not the INCI nomenclature of the chemicals within. It's not correct/legal to label it like that. Geogard Ultra is sodium benzoate and gluconolactone, and those chemicals should be disclosed on the label. I bought a syrup of Hyland cough for my kids thinking I was using a natural alternative. I didn't read it close enough... he has sodium benzoate on him. Many "natural" companies are using this now. :( What do you think of Juice Beauty's pure chamomile cleaner? Mix vitamin C w/sodium Benzate?! http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?skuId=2246030 limitproductId=xlsImpprod4350411 limitnavAction=push limitnavCount=1 limit subdoc=1jbaliciasilverstone habitcategoryId=cat801 Thank you very much. Yes, the product you have previously linked would have the potential to form benzene in small quantities over time, due to the presence of vitamin C and sodium benzoate together. Hello - in reference to the comment of Tasha above and this entry ... I'm looking for a new towel for my 2-year-old (use them in the hands, boom, clothes, anything that needs to be cleaned, etc.). Shots to learn the scope of the risks with polysorbate 20, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, etc...what is even more disturbing is the 7th Generation has just changed your baby towels/formula and are using more sodium benzoate in their wipes now. I only found a towel that was really all natural the "water washes" of Irreland, but people reported mold, which is also too risky for our family and existing health/development problems. I found Treehouse in the UK, but they're discontinuing their wipes and I can't locate them anywhere. All other "natural" wipes have horrible ingredients. I already care about my child's development problems and have all the symptoms of sensory perception disorder. Unfortunately, with our chaotic calendar I need a disposable towel... is there any truly natural alternative you know, or if you force yourself to, what brand/ingredients are the minors of all evils? Thank you! I have recently been researching and found my son's hair detanglement spray " Johnson has no more tangles" has sodium benzoate and citric acid that I am - Is it safe to use in a child? I just bought a full line of "natural products" Bee shampoo and wash for my children out of Wallgreens, and one of the components listed is sodium benzoate, so my question is E Even when you look for and alternative healthy choice, there is no way out !!! in the product bottle, says 99.9% natural ... What else can a consumer do when the products listed as safety or natural also have these ingredients ... Hello, what is the alternative to sodium and gluconolactone benzoate if I want to make a natural facial cream? Do you have a recommendation for natural preservative? Hello, what about NEODEFEND, is safe as a preservative in a water-based leather spray? Thank you. I just bought the ATTITUDE shampoo sold in Target stores as recommended by EWG for security and has sodium benzoate and citric acid. Have you read your marketing? "Carcinogens are not allowed in their products" What is the truth then? Citric acid is NOT the same as vitamin C.Recommended Free Products & Disposed to my patients who tested sodium benzoate sensitiveFor those seeking sodium-free benzoate wipes, check the organic towels of Dr. Butler. They have them on Amazon. They are actually intended for the whole family despite the title of Amazon. The ingredients are as follows: "Dr. Butler's soothing cords consist of organic bamboo chlorine, filtered water, vitamin E (synthetic tocopherols), Rosemary oil extract, lysine, Ophficinalis calendula, Avena sativa extract, Recutita Chamomilla, Sodium Citrate, betaine. "There are vegetable oils, although allergies are a possibility. I use them as a general cleaning / towel of the body. One of the few I found in Amazon that met my "non-toxic" and "natural" standards. Post a new comment Notify me of follow-up comments by email.

Skincare Bolos + KitsPasa without the work of riddles Best sellers OZNTM Store favourites Are sodium benzoate and safe phenoxyethanel in skill-care products? Taking good care of your skin and investing in the daily care routine is something that is essential for a healthy and beautiful complexion. Take care of your skin because you know that a little self-care will now serve you well in the future. Choosing the right products to care for your skin can be a difficult task. Of course, the first thing you want most when choosing a skin care product is a list of ingredients that is designed to target our unique skin care challenges. , , and green tea extract are just a few examples of the ingredients that capture our attention and influence our options. What about the rest of the list of ingredients, the items listed in the much smaller print on the back of the container? It is within this list that you can find the true integrity of a product, but what should you look for and what should you avoid? The answer to this question is not simple. While the FDA keeps a close eye on the ingredients found in its cosmetic and skin care products, the agency does not have as much control over product safety as you might think. Except for certain color additives, the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act states that cosmetic ingredients do not need FDA approval before landing on their bath countertop. What can you do to protect against potentially harmful ingredients? You do research yourself and look for companies that choose soft and natural ingredients that are known to be not harmful to you or the environment. The problem with this is that there is not always truth in advertising, and some ingredients, though organic or natural of origin, are not always the options of "safest". A particular area to which this applies is to preservatives that are used in most skin care products (even labeled "Natural"), specifically sodium benzoate and phenoxyethanel. The preservatives are added to the skin care products to maintain stability, protect the integrity of the product and extend the shelf's useful life by inhibiting the growth of harmful microorganisms. When you think about it, this makes sense, even for natural skin care products. Most cosmetics and skin care products are manufactured in large lots and sit for weeks or even months before being sent. Once sent, they sometimes experience drastic temperature changes. Conservatives are a need, especially if the product contains water that will further promote the growth of bacteria and fungi. Sodium Benzoate and phenoxyethanol are two "natural" preservatives that should be careful to have in their skin care products. Although it is widely used, and is reported as generally safe, there are reasons to worry about the use of both ingredients. Knowledge is the key to taking better options, so let's take a closer look at both additives. Sodium Benzoate Sodium benzoate, also called E211, is the salty product of benzoic acid. Sodium benzoate has been used to cover or improve the smell of products and also as anticorrosive. It has been more recently used as a preservative. It is excellent to inhibit the growth of fungi, yeasts and bacteria in food, beverages and personal care products. Sodium benzoate occurs naturally in fruits such as apples, crabs, plums and plums. The problem with this additive is not the ingredient itself, but rather what it does when combined with certain other ingredients, specifically ascorbic acid, or vitamin C. As you may know, vitamin C is a common additive in skin care products today. Vitamin C is a molecule that is vital to healthy skin. It helps in the synthesis of collagen and helps to repair the damages that have been caused by exposure to ultraviolet rays. This is just the beginning of how vitamin C protects the health of your skin. In other words, it is one of the best natural anti-aging ingredients available. When sodium benzoate is found with ascobial acid, a chemical reaction occurs and the result is a byproduct called benceno. Benzene is one of the most widely used chemicals in the United States. You can find it in other chemicals, plastics, dyes, rubber, detergents and pesticides. Benzene is also in second-hand smoke. According to the American Cancer Society, it is known that benzene is a cancer-causing agent based on both human and animal studies. Since benzene itself is not added to skin care products, it is produced as a by-product, the amounts found in a vitamin The serum with sodium benzoate is relatively lower compared to what it would find in a room full of smoke of cigarettes. However, the chemical is still there, even in tiny quantities, and is being applied to your skin where you can easily absorb it into your system. Although not related to skin care, it is worth mentioning that sodium benzoate is often used as a preservative in foods and drinks that also contain vitamin C. The research has found levels of benzene of twenty parts per billion in some soft drinks that contain the combination. That sounds insignificant, however, the safe level of benzene in drinking water has been determined to be only five parts per billion, which is significantly lower than that found in the above-mentioned soft drinks. Increased risk of cancer is only a possible side effect of long-term exposure to benzene. Other potential side effects include: The lower line is that while sodium benzoate is a safer alternative to some other chemical preservatives in skin care products, it is not yet the best option and its long-term use raises some concerns and is questionable at best. Fenoxyethanol Phenoxyethanol, also called Etileno Glycol Monophenyl Ether, is a preservative with antibacterial properties. Phenoxyethanel is naturally found in green tea, however the type you can find in the list of ingredients of your moisturizer was probably created in a laboratory when treating phenol (created benzene) with ethylene oxide. The result is a product that is chemically the same as phenoxyethanel naturally. Phenoxyethanel became more popular as a condom in skin care products as a "natural" replacement for parabens and formaldehyde release ingredients. Since phenoxyethanol can naturally be derived, it would appear that potential side effects would be significantly less than the chemicals it has replaced. However, that is not necessarily the case. While phenoxyetanol is usually considered one of the mildest preservatives commonly used, there are some studies that show that the ingredient can be irritating and caustic to the skin, even causing blistering in some cases. According to the material safety data sheet on phenoxyethanel, it is known that it causes irritation to both the skin and the lungs. Based only on that information, this is something we should not be completely comfortable with rubbing on our skin. Other possible side effects of phenoxyethanel include: Phenoxyethanel as an ingredient in cosmetics and skin care products can be disguised under many different names. If you don't see the phenoxyethanol word on your ingredient list, take a closer look at these aliases: Safe Alternatives Once you start looking at the ingredient lists, you will soon realize that there are many companies that claim to be all natural and smooth, however you don't fully support the claim with the chemicals they put in their products. There are some alternatives that are really natural, soft and safe to use as preservatives in skin care products. Two ingredients such that you should look for are sodium citrate and anisic P acid. In OZNaturals, we are proud to be able to say that our products are made without harmful preservatives. We live in a world where nature and science can unite to bring us safer and more effective alternatives. Each has a responsibility when it comes to supporting companies and products that do not sacrifice our health for the sake of their bottom line. Each of us has the responsibility to protect our health by using our ability to influence manufacturers with our options, and each has the responsibility not to establish ourselves with lower toxic ingredients. There are safe alternatives and we need to support and encourage their use. The price for not doing so is simply too high for any of us to pay."
